Godparents should be people of conviction who practice their faith. The General Introduction to the Rite of Baptism for Children sets down the following qualifications for Godparents:
Normally each child has a Godfather and a Godmother, however one Catholic sponsor would be sufficient. The Godparents help the parents bring the child up in the Faith and serve as a link between the children and the wider Christian community. It is desirable that this sponsor be the same when the child is subsequently Confirmed.
Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism, we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” (CCC 1213)
Parents of infants and young children who are to be baptized at Christ the King should be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly and contribute their time, talent and resources for the continued growth of the parish.
Please contact Cindy Rice in the Office of Discipleship & Evangelization to schedule your child’s Baptism as early as possible. Scheduling a Baptism before a child’s birth is quite in order. Baptisms are usually scheduled after the 12:15pm Sunday Mass or at a time agreed upon with the priest.
All parents wishing their child to be Baptized are required to attend a Baptismal Seminar (see right-hand column for schedule). Parents who have attended the Seminar previously are invited but not required to attend again. Both parents should plan to attend the Seminar.
