The Afghan Refugee family adopted and sponsored by Christ the King Parish sends their thanks and gratitude to the many kind parishioners who have helped to welcome and settle them in their new permanent residence in Oklahoma City.
A group of Christ the King parishioners is working closely with the family, and we we are so pleased to tell you about their progress, made in large part due to your kindness. Due to security issues, we are unable to share photos but you will recall we have adopted a loving and lively family of ten - two adults and eight children. Our family finally was able to move into permanent housing after living in hotel rooms for seven months in three different hotels. Move-in day was truly exciting--all smiles and so much gratefulness!
Thanks to the funds you donated, beds were delivered; new dishes and cookware were washed and stored; linens were organized; kitchen and bathrooms were stocked; bed pallets were made up; cushions for seating were arranged. Donated furniture and rugs were delivered and a vacant apartment became a home.
As you know, our family is non-English speaking, but they managed to repeatedly express their thanks to all of you who have helped them. The family now lives in an area where other Afghan Refugee families, as well as Oklahoma City residents, have made their home. This provides a feeling of community and a means of learning about their new home in America.
Our family has learned where to shop for traditional Afghan food and clothing. Parishioners have driven family members on these outings as well as to appointments arranged by Catholic Charities for legal services. Our family has faced some health issues and again parishioners have helped with appointments and delivering prescriptions. The school-age children are enrolling in Putnam City schools and, most importantly, the father of the family is finally able to seek employment near his new home. Transportation remains a challenge.
Our family will continue to have needs. Perhaps you can help? Needs include driving, shopping, appointments, English classes, and tutoring, just to name a few. We will be inviting many more members of our parish to play a role in truly welcoming this family to become a part of our community. Please think about what role you might play in helping our family to become successfully independent.
As always, you can make a donation to the Christ the King Afghan Refugee Fund. If you choose to donate by CHECK, please make your check payable to Christ the King and write "Refugee" in the memo line. If you choose to donate online, please designate the "Afghan Refugee Fund" account and make a "one time donation."
